Arundhati Roy was trained as an architect. Her first novel, The God of Small Things, won the Booker Prize in 1997, spent 49 weeks on the New York Times bestseller lists, and has been published in 33 languages. She has published three essay collections, Power Politics (South End Press, 2001) and The Cost of Living and War Talk. Roy is the recipient of the Lannan Foundation's 2002 Award
for Cultural Freedom. She lives in New Delhi.
