Tsunami and it’s aftermath in Sri Lanka with Dr. Nadarajah Shanmugaratnam.
Each and every one of us has been affected in some ways by the
earthquake and the resulting tsunami in the Indian Ocean half way
on the other side of the world. More then 200,000 people have
died in more ten different countries and millions have been
rendered homeless. Indonesia, India, Sri Lanka, Thailand and
Somalia being the worst hit.
In our show we will focus on the affects of tsunami and it’s
aftermath in Sri Lanka and the challenges faced by Sri Lankan
people and the government in reconstruction of the tsunami
affected areas. We will talk to Nadarajah Shanmugaratnam,
Professor of Development Studies at Noragric, Center for
International Environment and Development Studies
The focus of Dr Shanmugaratnam’s studies is Political Economy and
Institutional Economics; Policy and institutional aspects of
rural development, reconstruction of war-affected societies and
natural resource. His specific interests include
• Deprivation and poverty in war-affected areas of Sri Lanka
• Peace building and development (Sri Lanka, Sudan)
• Cooperation and conflict in rebuilding war-torn communities in
Sri Lanka
