April 05, 2006: Coping with Stress and Depression

A roundtable discussion on how to help young adults and teenagers cope with stress and depression, with Dr. Shaila Patel, Dr. Vatsala Bhaskaran, and Anita Wadhwa.

Depression is an ailment we are all aware of, but it continues to
be a very difficult problem to cope with – so much so that
suicide is a leading cause of death among young adults. Cultural
barriers in the South Asian community make things more difficult.

Today’s show is about helping teens and young adults cope with
stress and depression . We will discuss with our panel what
depression means, what causes it and how and when to seek help.

This show is being organized with the cooperation of Daya, an
organization serving South Asian families affected by domestic
violence. (www.dayahouston.org)
Our panelists are:

Shaila Patel, a pediatrician and the President of Daya.
Vatsala Bhaskaran, a psychiatrist and a board member of Daya.
Anita Wadhwa, a local writer, activist, teacher who will also
relate her own experience.
